Shampoo (DVD)
This fast-paced 1975 comedy, written by Robert Towne and directed by Hal Ashby (previous collaborators on THE LAST DETAIL), provides a sharp, satiric view of the sexual mores of 1960s Southern California. In the last few days before the 1968 election, George (Warren Beatty), a very popular Beverly Hills hairdresser who wants to open his own shop, becomes sexually involved with several, if not all, of his female customers. Drawing on the audience`s knowledge of Beatty`s reputation as a ladies` man, Towne`s script cleverly uses the expectation of fun and carefree sexual high jinks to then slowly begin to show the emotional damage this lifestyle has done, not just to everyone around him, but in a deeper sense to George himself. On the night that Nixon is elected there is a big party for which George has done all the women`s hair. Nixon`s corrupt world parallels George`s deceitful life, which, in both cases, eventually catches up with them.R"

Based on Elmore Leonards famous crime novel, OUT OF SIGHT finds director Steven Soderbergh back in Hollywood after a brief return to the independent world with SCHIZOPOLIS and GRAYS ANATOMY. A funny, hip, and vibrant action-drama, OUT OF SIGHT tells the story of the unlikely relationship that forms between an FBI agent and a career criminal. After Jack Foley (George Clooney) escapes from jail with the help of his partner, Buddy Bragg (Ving Rhames), he takes Karen Sisco (Jennifer Lopez), a sexy federal agent, hostage. Immediately sparks fly between the two. Eventually they let her go and leave Miami behind, heading directly for Detroit, where they plan to rob a former cellmate of theirs, a wealthy, white-collar criminal (Albert Brooks). When Karen finally locates Foley, a passionate encounter unfurls (edited ingeniously by Anne V. Coates, recalling Nicolas Roegs classic DONT LOOK NOW). As Foley zeroes in on his target, Karen must decide which side shes on. Soderberghs film is a raucous ride through the criminal underworld, featuring spot-on performances by Clooney and Lopez. It`s the supporting cast that makes OUT OF SIGHT so unforgettable, however; Rhames, Steve Zahn, Luis Guzman, and especially Don Cheadle deliver hysterical turns that keep the laughs coming as the tension continues to mount.

Originally famed for its sexual frankness, Bernardo Bertoluccis LAST TANGO IN PARIS has endured because of its sophisticated storytelling and the fine performances of its principals. Marlon Brando weaved details from his own life into the character of Paul, the world-hopping American who had finally settled into a marriage and proprietorship of a fleabag hotel in Paris. His wifes suicide sends him into an existential tailspin, however, and he winds up wandering through an apartment up for rent. Enter Jeanne (Maria Schneider), a lovely Parisian girl (shes 20 to Pauls 45) also viewing the apartment. The two find themselves making love and strike up a strange affair, carried on without names, in the apartment where they meet. Paul wants to forget his wife, and Jeanne is overwhelmed by her fianci (Jean-Pierre Leaud, in a somewhat Bertolucci-satirizing role), a filmmaker who wants her to be his subject and inspiration. No taboo is out-of-bounds in their relationship, but confrontation comes when Paul breaks the spell of impersonality. Brandos monologue beside his dead wife has sent many a film student into a paroxysm of pleasure.
