The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars and Motor Kings (DVD)
Richard Pryor, Billy Dee Williams, and James Earl Jones star in this appealing comedy about a group of black baseball players who defect from the 1930s Negro National League. The leads are based on authentic heroes Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson. The year is 1939, and Negro League baseball players Bingo Long (Williams) and Leon Carter (Jones) have had enough of the black team owners` harsh treatment. So they decide to leave their team and form one of their own. Bingo and Leon`s team is a hit--that is, until the other owners pressure them into leaving the league. The All-Stars then travel rural America, playing against white teams, for white crowds. But, even though they are just as talented as their opponents (or more so), the black players must resort to comedic antics and tomfoolery on the field, in order to be accepted by audiences. Hilarious physical comedy and fine performances provide a thought-provoking balance of social issues and comedy.PG"

ONE TRUE THING tells the sobering story of a family whose strength is tested when tragedy strikes. Ellen Gulden (Renee Zellweger), a writer living in New York City, has dedicated her life to becoming a successful journalist. When she learns that her mother, Kate (Meryl Streep--nominated for an Oscar for her performance) is dying of cancer, her life is forever altered. Ellens father, George Gulden (William Hurt), a National Book Award winner and university professor, pressures her into moving home and sacrificing her own life for her mothers sake. The pressure of running the household combined with the pain of seeing her mother grow terminally ill threatens to overwhelm Ellen, and she is further upset when she discovers that her father may not be the ideal she thought he was. Based on the book by journalist Anna Quindlen, ONE TRUE THING tackles its serious subject matter without becoming heavy-handed, a tribute to Carl Franklin`s (ONE FALSE MOVE) accomplished, compassionate direction.

Made for Each Other (DVD)
Jimmy Stewart and Carole Lombard star as newlyweds in this delightful romantic dramedy. Stewart plays Johnny Mason, an amiable New York City lawyer who has put his career in jeopardy by refusing the hand of his employers daughter. His beloved wife, Jane (comically portrayed by Lombard), is despised by Johnnys mother (Lucile Watson), who takes it upon herself to move in with the young couple. Things go from bad to worse when Jane gives birth to a child the family can ill afford. When the infant becomes sick on New Years Eve, the pressure falls on Johnny to acquire medication from out of state in order to save both his child and his marriage. What do a down-and-out Broadway producer, his anxiety-attack-prone accountant, a go-go dancing Swedish secretary, and a Nazi playwright have in common? They`re all part of Mel Brooks`s wild and wacky first film, THE PRODUCERS. In this hysterical farce, rapacious but lovable producer Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel) hasn`t had a hit in years and resorts to fulfilling sexually crazed little old ladies` fantasies for extra cash. But when he meets his new meek, neurotic accountant, Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder), the two accidentally come up with a plot to oversell shares in a surefire flop musical and make off with the profits. The plan sends the new partners-in-crime on a search for the worst play ever: SPRINGTIME FOR HITLER, written by an ex-Nazi (Kenneth Mars) whose only friends are the filthy city pigeons he keeps on his roof.
Inspired, manic performances by all involved, along with Brooks`s lively direction--which affectionately alludes to such MGM Golden Age musicals as SINGIN` IN THE RAIN--make THE PRODUCERS both referential and highly original as it moves along swiftly to the ultimate musical climax.
