POLYESTER: Francine Fishpaw (Divine) is a troubled housewife trapped in suburban Baltimore. Her household is a disaster--her husband is the philandering proprietor of a sleazy movie theater, her daughter performs lewd dances in her high school cafeteria for money, her son is a predatory foot fetishist, and the family pet is suicidal. After she hits alcoholic rock bottom, along comes Todd Tomorrow (Tab Hunter), a dreamboat who runs an art-house drive-in theater. But is he really as angelic as he seems? Francine may require the help of her eccentric nouveau riche best friend, Cuddles (Edith Massey), to discover the truth. Inspired by soap operas and weepy 1950s melodramas, John Waters combines the conventions of that genre (soft lighting, teary organ music) with William Castle-like gimmickry for his most polished, biggest budgeted film yet. The original theatrical release was presented in Odorama--an innovative technique that allowed the audience to smell the movie with the aid of a scented card featuring the same scents Francine picks up with her overactive olfactory powers. Divine gives yet another wonderful comedic performance, and `50s idol Hunter proves that hes game for anything. DESPERATE LIVING: Peggy Gravel (Mink Stole) is a frazzled housewife who has just been released from a mental hospital. Arriving at her suburban Baltimore home in a delicate state, she quickly decides that her husband is trying to kill her...and coerces her rotund maid, Grizelda (Jean Hill), to suffocate him with her ample bottom. In order to escape imprisonment, the unlikely duo seeks refuge in Mortville, a oddball shantytown populated by criminals and social outcasts. To the citizens dismay, however, vicious Queen Carlotta (Edith Massey) rules the kingdom with an iron fist. With assistance from a cranky pre-op transsexual (Susan Lowe) and her sexpot lover (Liz Renay), Peggy and Grizelda attempt to navigate their strange new lives.

The plucky, pigtailed Eliza Thornberry (voiced by Lacey Chabert) and her high-strung chimpanzee pal (Tom Kane) are out to stop some poachers in this feature film version of the Nickelodeon TV cartoon show. While her family is off on a trek through the Serengeti in their high-tech, gadget-filled RV, Eliza is sent off to a stuffy English boarding school by her strict grandmother (Lynn Redgrave). Poor Eliza must figure out how to escape back to Africa and put a stop to the aforementioned evil poachers, all without her special ability to talk to the animals, a power she lost because of her obnoxious sister Debbie (Danielle Harris). Produced and animated by Klasky-Csupo (the team responsible for THE RUGRATS MOVIE) the THORNBERRYS` colorful 2D animation style is refreshingly simplistic, yet still manages to depict its jungle settings with surprisingly vivid intensity. Youngsters should be consistently engaged and adults will appreciate the high zaniness level, rapid-fire plotting, and absence of cloying sentiment. Celebrity voices include: Rupert Everett, Tim Curry, Marisa Tomei, and Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea as Eliza`s little brother Donnie, a gibbering wild child raised by apes. Part tribute to the Doris Day/Rock Hudson romantic comedies of the 1950s and 1960s, and part commentary on the changing sexual mores of a bygone era, DOWN WITH LOVE is a bright, funny, technicolor treat that sets out to prove that opposites attract. Set in early-60s New York, the film follows the exploits of hot new feminist author Barbara Novak (Renee Zellweger), whose best-selling book Down With Love teaches women to focus on their careers, and never fall in love. This viewpoint is in direct contrast with Catch Block (Ewan McGregor), the simmering, smooth journalist and man-about-town. Catch and Barbara soon become arch enemies. But as the book sales soar, Catch hatches a devious plan, disguising himself in an attempt to seduce the divine Ms. Novak, thereby debunking the myths of her book, and simultaneously winning the journalistic scoop of the year. Director Peyton Reed has successfully emulated the comedies of yesteryear with this hammy, heady mix of endless double entendres, split-screen techniques, and a healthy dose of sexual politics. Zellweger and McGregor clearly delight in their retro roles, deliciously exaggerating their characters, with ample support provided by David Hyde Pierce and Sarah Paulson. DOWN WITH LOVE is a comedy that uses characters from the past to deliver a message that resonates in the present, and provides across-the-board appeal for audiences of all ages.PG-13"
