Douglas Sirk whips up a devastating maelstrom of melodrama in WRITTEN ON THE WIND, the explosive tale of the Hadleys, a wealthy Texas oil family whose debauched members are on a crash course for self-destruction. From the windswept drunken car ride and pistol shot opening the film, Sirk leads an artful backward glance at the misjudgments, cruelty and bad faith that led the Hadleys and their unfortunate hangers-on to the point of no return. Robert Stack is Kyle Hadley, number one black sheep of the Hadley Clan, who attempts to cure his troubled life with a whirlwind marriage to the beautiful and unsuspecting Lucy Moore (Lauren Bacall). Marylee Hadley is the rebellious and drunken younger Hadley, perpetually in trouble and eager for diversions from her vacant existence. Rock Hudson as Kyle`s virtuous best friend Mitch is the pillar of sanity around which the entire Hadley Clan clings for its survival. However, when meddlesome Marylee, wounded from a spurned infatuation with Mitch, insinuates that Lucy`s expected child is actually his, the already fragile and explosive situation devolves into a tragic battle to the death. THE BETSY, directed by Daniel Petrie and based on Harold Robbins`s sordid potboiler about several generations of an American car manufacturing dynasty, stars Laurence Olivier as 90-year-old Loren Hardeman, who rules the family with an iron fist. The clan, nonetheless, is constantly involved in intrigues and affairs ranging from adultery to abuse of power. Although Loren has passed along the family business to his grandson, Loren Hardeman III (Robert Duvall), he has one idea that he is desperate to realize. The Betsy is Loren`s dream car, named after his doting great-granddaughter (Kathleen Beller), and he hires Angelo Perino (a young and seductive Tommy Lee Jones) to help him secretly create the economical, efficient vehicle. Angelo is an injured race car driver who diligently works to design the car while seducing Betsy and having an affair with Loren III`s mistress (a terrifically haughty Lesley-Anne Down). But the money-grubbing auto industry isn`t too fond of Loren`s secret pursuit, and their desire to sabotage him soon sets off more melodramatic action than a family can handle. This soap opera, brimming over with intrigue and seduction has been compared to television`s DYNASTY and other spicy tales of romance and big money power plays. Petrie`s film is certainly ripe with scandal, melodrama, and an enjoyably campy all-star cast, including Katharine Ross, Jane Alexander, and Paul Rudd. Based on the Elmore Leonard novel that inspired both the 1969 film and this remake, THE BIG BOUNCE is a comic film noir about an everyman who finds trouble in the form of a beautiful blonde. Jack Ryan (Owen Wilson) is a small-time scam artist who is determined to leave that life behind after yet another run-in with the law. But when he meets the mistress of his former boss, Ray Ritchie (Gary Sinese), all bets are off. Nancy (newcomer Sara Foster) is hot, mischievous, and up to no good, but Jack is too smitten to use his better judgment. It isn`t long before he`s agreed to help her steal $200,000 from Ray. Along the way, he must contend with a series of potentially shady characters, who might not be what they seem (Morgan Freeman, Charlie Sheen, and Bebe Neuwirth). Directed with an easygoing approach that fits perfectly with the laid back Hawaiian locales, THE BIG BOUNCE gets an enormous boost from Owen Wilson, who appears to be having the time of his life. This might have something to do with his costar Foster, a former model whose mere presence is enough to make the screen sizzle. The movie also features hilarious supporting turns from Freeman, Neuwirth, and especially Sheen.
