Playing God has its consequences, which is the theme of the tricky time-travel shockfest THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT. J. Mackye Gruber and Eric Bress, who share writing and directing credits, make a splash with a gripping script that never fails to throw twists and loops into the plot. Both thematically and visually, the film is similar to the perfect commercial filmmaking in the team`s script for FINAL DESTINATION II. Here, Evan Trehorn (Ashton Kutcher) is a college student who has suffered from blackouts and memory loss since he was a child. Tormented by deeply repressed childhood memories, he has visions of his best friend and first love Kayleigh (Amy Smart) as a child (Irene Gorovaia) whose Dad (Eric Stoltz) is a child molester, and whose brother Tommy has a serious sadistic streak. In search of greater clarity, Evan pores over his journals and is physically transported back in time where he is still a young boy (John P. Amedori) and has the ability to change what happened. But soon he realizes that changing history has caused calamitous results elsewhere. A mesmerizing thriller with a dark underlying mystery, THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT is delightfully chilling.

Martin Scorsese teams up with legendary producer Roger Corman to create BOXCAR BERTHA, a rollicking period drama that features a standout performance from Barbara Hershey. Hershey is Boxcar Bertha Thompson, a depression-era woman who loses her father in an airplane accident. Joining up with controversial union leader Big Bill Shelley (David Carradine), Bertha is forced into a life on the run when a group of conservative witch hunters target Shelley as a communist. Along the way, Shelley and Bertha fall into a life of underground crime, steal from railroad bosses, and break out of jail. Their run comes to a crashing halt when the extremely powerful railroad company catches up with Shelley and exacts a nasty revenge. Based on the book SISTER OF THE ROAD by Boxcar Bertha Thompson and Ben L. Reitman, Scorseses film is an extremely entertaining ride through one of the most important eras in American history. His surehanded direction proves that he has the ability to tell traditional formula pictures, although his desire to create a new cinematic realism would surface the following year with MEAN STREETS. In the title role, Hershey is passionate, hilarious, and sincere, providing BOXCAR BERTHA with a heart and energy that keeps it truly refreshing.
