The Good Fairy (DVD)
Margaret Sullavan stars in this William Wyler comedy as Luisa Ginglebusher, a young woman who has spent most of her life in a Budapest orphanage. When a movie theatre owner comes to the orphanage looking for potential usherettes, Luisa`s guardian pushes her toward the opportunity to leave the orphanage and tells her to be a good fairy . She takes the advice literally when she decides to play the good fairy for Dr. Max Sporum, a poor but honest Budapest lawyer, by pretending to be his husband. Regardless, it isn`t long before the beautiful Luisa has attracted the attention of a number of other Budapest bachelors, among them a rich meatpacking mogul whom Luisa uses to send some lucrative business to Dr. Sporum. As Luisa`s ruse causes endless complications and confusion, she only becomes more determined to see that Dr. Sporum enjoys the wealth he deserves and to evade the clutches of her more demonstrative suitors.

THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS is a nitro-burning joyride that makes outstanding use of special effects, innovative camera work, and a nonstop throbbing soundtrack. From the opening sequence--a high-speed, high-tech truck robbery--the film never drops below the red line. Roaring along at breakneck speed, Dom (Vin Diesel) and his crew meet on the streets of L.A. each night to show off their high-powered racers. When new guy Brian (Paul Walker) wants to add his fuel to the fire, he can`t cough up the cash to race, but offers up his car as collateral. In their tiny jacked compacts, Dom, Brian, and Edwin (Ja Rule) burst into a high-gear race with Brian nearly beating perennial champion Dom. But in the final moments, he loses the race and his car. Brian`s debt is quickly cleared, however, when he saves Dom both from the cops and from a potentially violent encounter with Johnny Tran (Rick Yune), a rival gang lord. Dom takes Brian under his wing--a decision that disgusts his gang but delights his sister Mia (Jordana Brewster). The gang never suspects that Brian is not who he seems: he is actually an undercover cop, and though he wishes otherwise, he`s there to bust Dom for committing the armed truck robbery witnessed in the opening scenes.

In ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES, Barry Sonnenfeld has performed the remarkable feat of making a sequel even more entertaining than its predecessor. The charmingly creepy Addams family (based on characters originally created by the morbid Charles Addams) have two new additions, mustachioed baby Pubert and sunny nanny Debbie Jellinsky. While Debbie (wonderfully played by Joan Cusack) charms the adults of the family, particularly Uncle Fester, the children discover that she is actually a serial killer called the Black Widow. The children are soon shipped off to summer camp as part of nanny dearests diabolical plot. Its at Camp Chippewa that some of the funniest scenes occur, particularly one in which Wednesday tells genuinely terrifying ghost stories to the other campers and another that features both Addams children being sent the Harmony Hut as punishment for trying to escape. Sonnenfeld and production designer Ken Adams (no relation) make sure that each minute is a pleasure to look at by creating a feast of dark visions and macabre sight gags. ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES will be most enjoyed by those with a taste for flip gallows humor.PG-13"
