SOUND & FURY is a documentary that examines the issues surrounding the controversial cochlear implant--the medical technology that, through an operation, allows deaf people to hear. The film follows the Artinian family--adult brothers Chris (hearing) and Peter (deaf), their wives and their children--living in Glen Cove Long Island. Over a two-year period, the camera pays witness to the pain, frustration, and conflicts they encounter as these parents research the pros and cons of giving their children (5-year-old Heather, and 1 1/2-year-old Peter) the operation. At the root of the argument against the operation is the fear that the deaf culture--and American Sign Language--would be lost entirely were the Cochlear implant to become a standard procedure administered to all deaf children. Arguments in favor of the procedure argue that a child who can hear with use of the cochlear implant could participate in hearing schools where they might learn more, learn faster, and never feel that they are disabled and different from other children.
This film, with its passionate but entirely objective approach to this difficult subject, will change viewers` ideas about deafness, parenting, medical advancements, and will leave them pondering these ideas for a long time to come. A young girl in a red coat plays by a pond in the gray English winter. Her young brother plays nearby while their parents work inside. Suddenly a bloodred stain forms on John Baxter`s (Donald Sutherland) slide of a church window and he runs outside just before his son calls. He is too late--his daughter has drowned. His wife, Laura (Julie Christie), screams, melding into the screech of a drill renovating a church in Venice some time later, where John and Laura have fled to work and move on. During lunch one afternoon, Laura meets two frumpy English sisters, one of whom is a blind psychic. She gives Laura a reading in which she explains that that she can see the Baxters` dead daughter, Christine. John has recurrent symbolic visions and has seen and chased a young girl in a red coat running through the backstreets of Venice. However, he dismisses ESP as manipulative mumbo jumbo and, when Laura turns up missing, fears that the sisters may be the murderers the police are seeking. Francois Ozon`s haunting UNDER THE SAND stars the remarkable British actress Charlotte Rampling, who plays Marie Drillon: a strong, attractive, professional, independent middle-aged woman trying to get her life back on track after the sudden disappearance of her husband. At the university where she teaches English, she reads to her students from the melancholy book THE WAVES by Virginia Woolf. Through all of this, Ozon`s camera caresses Marie and encourages her, always casting her in cold, confident light. Using film language such as the repeated double reflection of Marie`s face in the mirror, audiences come to understand Marie`s innermost thoughts and feelings. She is a woman confronting herself (her identity, her age, her body, her sexuality, her emotions, her intellect) with brutal honesty.
