Gene Hackman stars in THE CONVERSATION as Harry Caul, a surveillance expert whose job is taping the lives and conversations of others. With the character of Caul, director Francis Ford Coppola has created a complex role for which Hackman is perfect--a man in complete control on the outside but breaking down within. Teri Garr, Harrison Ford, and Elizabeth MacRae costar, but Hackman, in top form in every scene, is the real reason to watch this true classic. The stirring, classic opening shot of the film is a long, slow zoom into Union Square in San Francisco. A young couple, Mark (Frederic Forrest) and Ann (Cindy Williams), are having what seems like a mundane conversation while Harry and his assistant Stanley (John Cazale) eavesdrop from a nearby van. But when Harry carefully analyzes his tape, he uncovers bits of unsettling dialogue. Suspicious of his client`s motives for wanting the tape, he becomes uncharacteristically worried about the people he may have endangered.

Oasis - Familiar To Millions (DVD)
Attempting to explain the internal problems that have plagued British rock band Oasis since their formation in the early 1990`s would take more time and effort than the topic warrants. To watch this fantastic July 2000 concert though, is to get at least a cursory understanding of the volatile characters and relationships that make Oasis such an entertaining band. The quintessential postmodern rock star, shaggy eyebrow-ed Liam is not content to let his music speak for itself; instead he postures, whines, denounces, acts out, and self-destructs in front of his entire country. And indeed, to the delight of a sold-out audience, he continued with this tradition on that summer night at London`s massive Wembley Stadium. Only a few days after being left by his wife, actress Patsy Kensit, Liam is a visible mess -- flailing around in an inebriated state, he yells non-sequitors, curses his way through songs, and in the end, refuses to leave the stage. As his brother Noel (the band`s mastermind) simultaneously tries to keep the peace, play his music, and squelch his annoyance at his brother, one can see the band falling apart at the seams. Miraculously though, Oasis manage to bang out a great set of tunes, old and new, proving their worth to thousands of fans.NR"

Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris (DVD)
This experimental musical revue combines the songwriting talents of the renowned Belgian-born Jacques Brel with the distinct stylistic sense of 1970s film. Brel`s songs deal, movingly so, with topics as vast as love, death, and war. Bringing them to life seems a challenge, but one met by director Denis Heroux. Using tools as unexpected as puppets and extensive location shooting, Heroux places Brel`s songs in a unique context -- one that frees them from theatrical constraints. Mort Shuman (who wrote songs for The Drifters and Elvis Presley) converts the songs into beautiful English-language versions, but does not lose the essence intended by Brel. In an age where the classic troubadour seems to have vanished, JACQUES BREL IS ALIVE AND WELL AND LIVING IN PARIS reminds one of the need for singers to translate universal emotion into song.PG"
