Umberto D. (DVD)
UMBERTO D., from director Vittorio De Sica, is a simple, heartbreaking tale about the life of an elderly pensioner. Penniless and alone, with only the maid (Lina Genneri) from his rooming house and a devoted dog for companionship, the old man (Carlo Battisti) contemplates suicide. But then one day, a ray of hope pierces his bleak existence, and everything changes. This careful observation of one man`s attempt to keep his dignity in the face of a hostile society is one of the pearls of Italian post-war cinema.NR"

Musically oriented filmmaker Allan Arkush directs this fine biopic which tracks the legendary career of The Temptations. One of R&B`s most influential, revered bands, the five men enjoyed overnight success and helped define the Motown period. Like many other success stories, though, this one has a dark side -- with self-destructive impulses and personal problems threatening to destroy the band`s reign. In addition to capturing the drama of the group`s rise and fall, THE TEMPTATIONS features eight of the classic songs which made them legendary, including My Girl, Papa Was A Rollin` Stone, and Get Ready.

The Color Purple (DVD)
Steven Spielbergs masterful adaptation of Alice Walker`s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel stars Whoppi Goldberg, in her impressive screen debut, as Celie, a sharecropper`s daughter living in rural Georgia. The film opens in 1909 when Celie is a young girl, a victim of incest, pregnant with her father`s child. Ugly and unloved, separated from her children and her sister, Celie`s only option is marriage to an abusive, philandering husband (Danny Glover) who treats her little better than a slave. Her life changes forever when her husband brings his mistress, a beautiful blues singer named Shug (Margaret Avery), into the house. THE COLOR PURPLE was also the film debut for Oprah Winfrey, who beautifully plays Celies sister-in-law, Sofia. THE COLOR PURPLE was nominated for 11 Academy Awards (including one each for Goldberg, Avery, and Winfrey) but surprisingly won no Oscars, and although the film was nominated for a Best Picture award, Spielberg was snubbed by the academy and was not nominated for Best Director.PG-13"

Compaqeros (DVD)
Actor Franco Nero and director Sergio Corbucci (DJANGO) team up once again for this excellent spaghetti western. Violent and highly stylized, the film stars Nero as a Swedish mercenary and Tomas Milian as a revolutionary who attempt liberate an imprisoned professor (Rey) who holds the code to a safe containing a small fortune. However, one of Nero`s old partners, John (Palance), a psychotic mercenary who has a wooden hand and the disturbing habit of feeding his pet hawk human flesh, throws a wrench into Nero`s plans when he turns up with a few ideas of his own about what to do with the money. Featuring a score by Ennio Morricone, an outstanding cast, and a wicked sense of humor, COMPAQEROS stands out as a forgotten classic of the genre.NR"
