This dark-burnished bronze figure of the Buddha is done in the Sukhothai style. It shows the Buddha resting on an ornate stupa, at meditation, his left hand resting palm open in his lap, and his right hand touching the earth, in a gesture that signifies 'calling the earth to witness'. The gesture recalls a time when the Buddha was tempted by the demon Mara. His response was to simply point to the ground, and the whole earth (embodied by the goddess of the earth) rose up to defend the Buddha's purity of spirit.
