Good Sports Art New York Yankees Fourth of July Lithograph
The date: July 4, 1983. The place: Yankee Stadium in The Bronx. And 24-year-old Dave Righetti is about to strike out Boston's Wade Boggs and notch the first no-hitter by a Yankee pitcher since 1956, when Don Larsen tossed a perfect game against the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 5 of the World Series. Righetti struck out nine and walked four in recording the first regular-season no-hitter by a Yankee pitcher since Allie Reynolds blanked the Bosox on September 28, 1951. Righetti's no-no is the first by a lefthander in Yankee Stadium history. His hard, game-ending slider eluded a swinging Boggs, who came to the plate hitting .357. In artistic terms, "Fourth of July" can best be described as a "mixed media painting assemblage." You're actually seeing nine different paintings - the main painting on top and eight others within the box construction below. In addition, several pieces of memorabilia are incorporated into the eight panels. The wood frame and panel dividers (little bats) are part of the original artwork and therefore are visible in the published print.
